“Blessed are they who hunger after truth and beauty…” by kevin murray

Kahlil Gibran, was an incredibly gifted writer, who has provided us through his writing with beautiful insights to go along with his inspiring wisdom.  In his book, Jesus the Son of Man, Gibran reads the Beatitudes and paraphrases a particular sentence of it, as follows: “Blessed are they who hunger after truth and beauty, for their hunger shall bring bread, and their thirst cool water.”

When it comes to Holy Scripture it is important for us to be able to read such in a way and manner that not only renews and reinvigorates scriptural passages for us, but also when done astutely, to thus take us to a different level of insight into what has so been written for our edification and for our benefit.  The Beatitudes so stated by our Messiah, are not meant to be quickly glanced at or read in a rote-like manner, thereby to be pretty much forgotten when we soon get back to our everyday activities and routines; but rather these Beatitudes are provided to help inspire us to become better people as well as to aid us in getting a renewed perspective about that which we so see, hear, and look upon.

Our hunger is one of the most important driving forces in encouraging our desire to fulfill that hunger in a way and manner that will bring us lasting satisfaction.  Those then, that do not hunger after truth and beauty, are the very same people that will find it most difficult to find at some future point, that truth and beauty. In fact, these people that lack the desire and hunger for truth are basically lost, and are typically also those that are essentially wandering around within the same circle again and again, not seeming to comprehend that those that cannot redirect their activities to that straight and narrow pathway of progress, will become trapped within the circle of non-progression.  On the other hand, those that will not relent in their search to fulfill that hunger, until they become satiated with the truth that answers sincerely to that hunger, are the very people, that will find such, because that which is meant to be discovered, necessitates the continuous effort to find such, until that goal is successfully so met.

There are plenty of motivations that each of us could pay attention to, of which, some of those motivations are going to be positive and worthy, and some of those things, will lack those credentials.  Those that desire to know the truth, as well as to see the beauty which this world can so well represent, have made a noble determination to obtain that which has lasting value, over those other things, that at best, are counterfeit to such, or are simply dead-ends in their construct. There is no higher calling than to not be tied down by the routines and trivialities of what far too many people and societies think are so important, when these very things, represent far too often, distractions to that which is most important.

None of us will find satisfaction until we drink deeply from the very waters that provide such satisfaction, and those clear and cool waters, are represented only by that which is eternal in its construct, as well as being beneficial for us.  To walk past truth is to walk past that which will free us from the illusion that we have put in place of that truth; to dismiss beauty, is to misconstrue our opportunity to appreciate the incarnation that we are a part of and to thereby bypass how beautiful this creation at its very best, so represents for us.  Each day, we feed the hunger of our body; how much more of value it is to feed the hunger of that which has so actuated us in the first place.

“Blessed are they who remember their pain, and in their pain await their joy” by kevin murray

Kahlil Gibran, was an incredibly gifted writer, who has provided us through his writing with beautiful insights to go along with his inspiring wisdom.  In his book, Jesus the Son of Man, Gibran reads the Beatitudes and paraphrases a particular sentence of it, as follows: “Blessed are they who remember their pain, and in their pain await their joy.”

There are plenty of people that do suffer pain and disappointment, of the physical, of the mental, and of the spiritual.  Most of those people, complain about their pain, and virtually all of these people remember their pain; of which, some of those same people, dwell upon such pain over and over again, without bothering to take the corresponding necessary steps to learn relevant lessons from such.  The point of pain as well as of disappointment is never meant to make us to suffer endlessly and without any real lesson to such; but rather pain and disappointment should be always seen as a “wakeup” call for us to respond to in a positive, correcting, and productive manner.  That is to say, when we place our hand too close to something that is burning hot, we feel the pain of that flame, thereby signaling to our hand to remove itself from that which is causing the pain; in which, if that pain response did not happen not only would we suffer more from that lack of feedback, but we also would be susceptible to making the same sort of mistake in the future, for not remembering well that pain.

So too, it is necessary for us to suffer pain as well as disappointment, because having suffered so, we appreciate more the beauty and the joy of that success when we eventually overcome such.  In other words, sometimes we have to take a wrong step in order not only to get back on the correct pathway, but also to appreciate the value of being on the right pathway to begin with.  So too, it is important to see this world as not only a continual learning experience, but also as a true “proving ground;” of which, each of us is challenged to utilize our free will in a way and manner, that we will voluntarily choose that which is of positive value over that which is negative.  There are many that believe, such a choice as that to make is easy, but in actuality, it really is not; for our selfish ego will entice us with all sorts of temptations, in which, many of us, so believe that we can give in to those temptations, and not only be happy but remain of good character, only alas to find ourselves soon enough, feeling regret, disappointment, and shame.

We need to remember our pain, and our mistakes, for in this remembrance comes the determination to do better, so as to be a better and a more complete person, of which, when we achieve that success, we truly appreciate having overcome the travails to get there, which provides us with the appreciation of that joy, fully earned.

Blessed are the peacemakers…. by kevin murray

Kahlil Gibran, was an incredibly gifted writer, who has provided us through his writing with beautiful insights to go along with his inspiring wisdom.  In his book, Jesus the Son of Man, Gibran reads the Beatitudes and paraphrases a particular sentence of it, as follows: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for their spirit shall dwell above the battle, and they shall turn the potter’s field into a garden.”

The thing about war, seemingly justified or not, is that the killing and the destruction so done in battle, is a terrible thing; and further to the point, often the closer that we are to that war, the more that we have an inclination to thereby get caught up in the drama of the battle, and thereby to become susceptible to forgetting not only our own humanity, but also the humanity of all those that are in the pitch of that battle.  To believe, somehow, that the best or the most appropriate way to resolve difficulties between ourselves and other societies and people, is to actually have a physical fight, or a sanctioned war, is inhumane and also misguided, on every level.  Those then, that believe, that out of war, it so follows that there will then be a lasting and just peace, don’t have it right.  In actuality, only those that rise above the cacophony of the madness that entices human beings to do battle against one another -- that has been so occurring for eons, represent the only possible personages that have the perspective and thereby the wisdom to understand, that all that sound and fury, really does signify nothing.

We are all meant to be peacemakers, so that, rather than to give in to our worst nature which leads to destruction, hatred, hurt, and the like; we are meant instead to maintain our good character, by our willingness to be the suffering servant, to bite our tongue, to show consideration, and to always keep in our mind’s eye that behind the mask of war, that each of us is in actuality, the very same creation, with the very same unalienable rights as the other.  No battle, lasts forever, and nothing negative can sustain itself over a long period of time; for even those that are the most bellicose, have their moments of normality.  Long after the battle is over, the aftereffects are still there, but those that do their good part to bind the wounds, to heal the brokenhearted, and to uplift those that have seemingly lost hope, have created, in effect, a new garden, seeded with the blood, sweat, and tears of those so lost to us, but this garden, should it be faithfully tended to with love and care, is quite capable of eventually growing into the most beautiful and bountiful harvest.

Trauma and forgetfulness by kevin murray

There are those that believe that truly traumatic events, are capable of being repressed or even forgotten; until such are drudged back up, because of some triggering event, or possibly from the aegis of a therapist, that has discovered such, through counseling, hypnosis, or similar.  The very first thing to know is that people, even those that are on the surface seem quite independent, astute, and intelligent, are to a very meaningful extent, susceptible to believing certain things when so being guided by those that are in some respected position of authority.  That is to say, esteemed psychological therapists, that a given person implicitly trusts, have a great deal of influence over subsequently what a patient thereby believes or disbelieves.  So too, many people have an innate desire to please those that they respect, and sometimes in order to do so, they will agree to a story, or confirm a story, that they don’t really think to be true, themselves; but because that person in authority does, they then thus buy into it, and even augment such.

Some of us do go through incredibly traumatic events, of which, it is theorized by at least some people in authority, that the way that a traumatic incident is dealt with, at least part of the time, can include the suppression of such, so as to thereby get through life, without having to further dwell upon it, and therefore suffering from the possible continuous detrimental effect this would continue to have, upon us.  While, this may indeed make logical sense, the truth of the matter is, that terrible traumatic events that happen to us, are seldom forgotten, and therefore are seldom suppressed; but rather they are to a very large extent, instead, compartmentalized within the mind of the person having so suffered from that trauma.

Little kids are quite adept at imagining all sorts of things, good as well as bad, and thereby concocting stories that because of their implausibility and inconsistencies, could not conceivably have happened, yet they act well the part that such is true.  So too, adults are capable of the same sort of imagination, though typically far less often, and because of adults’ life experiences, they can often formulate a story that appears to be coherent as well as also being conceivable.  Those then, that believe such, without bothering to question the why, how, and where, have done themselves as well as the other person, a disfavor.  So too, all those therapists that claim that they have unearthed repressed memories of truly horrific things that have happened to a given patient, should have that information, especially if it is actionable, thoroughly investigated for the plausible veracity of such, before possible innocent parties are hurt, by the public exposure of it.

In reality, those events that are truly traumatic and horrific to a given person, are seldom forgotten. The reason that they aren’t forgotten, is somewhat akin to the same way a noticeable scar on a person’s body, is not forgotten -- because of its visibility and thereby its continual remembrance.  Not every scar that we so have is visible to the naked eye, though some of the very worst kind, are distinctly visible to the mind’s eye, and those that have suffered from such, will deal with their traumatic experience the best way that they know how, and the forgetting of them, is not one of the options, so of.

Police officers and the art of acting by kevin murray

One of those seminal events that a lot of people thought would make for safer and more civil interactions with police officers, was when bodycam videos became the norm within many police departments.  After all, rogue cops or cops prone to being overly aggressive, would because of that bodycam video, no doubt, temper their responses, and thereby become less aggressive and combative with those that they are supposed to serve and to protect.  Additionally, the public so dealing with police would also be less inclined to allow their emotions to escalate, by virtue of knowing that what they were saying and agitating about was also being recorded.  The thing is, though that is supposed to be what would happen, the actuality is to a very large extent, somewhat different in interesting ways, then what was first envisioned.

It must be acknowledged that for one thing, bodycam videos and the recording so of, are not being live-streamed to the general public, but in actuality those bodycam videos are pretty much under the control of the police department; though, in theory, subject to public purview through open access records to such.  What this really means, though, is that police departments to a very large extent, despite whatever laws are written, are going to take such video generated, and to the extent that they can control the narrative, do exactly that -- by not so timely releasing or by redacting or by conveniently losing, or by charging an excessive monetary amount, or by considering such as evidence for a potential case and thereby not making that video subject to release, or by the interminable delaying of those videos so requested by the public.  In other words, just because something is recorded, doesn’t mean that the record will always be released, which signifies that not all bad actions by police officers are ever going to see the public independent light of day.  This so signifies, that when police officers believe that a given action so taken may be a cause of concern, that they can get ahead of the curve, and thereby they do exactly that.

Additionally, there are plenty of people that when so being recorded, are prone to acting a part, in which, when this is done as part of a family video or whatnot, is perfectly fine.  On the other hand, when police officers, make it their point to act a part, this is definitely not okay.  For instance, when an officer, knows that they are using excessive force, they can, as part of exerting such force, say things such as, “stop resisting,” “put down that weapon,” “don’t kick at me,” and so on and so forth.  The fact that these words were spoken and the fact that videos are subject to more than one interpretation, provides these police officers with the “cover” that these things may indeed have been occurring, even if, in fact, they were made up or exaggerated, in order to justify violent action taken against a given subject.  That is to say, when a somewhat gullible juror who already believes in the necessity of law and order, hears something to the effect that someone being arrested, is resisting that arrest by the officer making that arrest, so heard and seen on that video, this may indeed be all that they need to hear or know, to completely justify, in their mind, every action subsequently taken to put down that purported resistance.

In short, to believe then, that every video so recorded tells the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth-- of which there is only one camera angle and the person closest to that camera can speak whatever words that they feel will help them sell the story that they are trying to tell, will lend itself to a distortion of the actual truth.

Tourism taxation for out-of-State corporations by kevin murray

America really is the United States of America, in which, when it comes to tax policies and the like, each individual State has its own peculiarities; though most States, on a fundamental level, have consistency to one another on how they go about doing that taxing.  One of the most annoying things that tourists visiting an individual State have to put up with, when they so rent a car or book a hotel room, is to be subject to a tourism tax, which usually is applicable, even when one is a resident of that particular State, just by virtue of renting that hotel room or car.  This seems to be one of those things, in which, as a captive audience, tourists can’t escape from, and the purpose of such a tax, seems unfair, since those paying such, are bringing in revenue into a particular locality, and having to pay a premium for the opportunity to do so.

What we so find with corporations today, is that with the exception of some huge multinational corporations, such as Walmart, that most multinational corporations actually do not have a physical location in each individual State, but typically have a hub State, which is their headquarters, as well as some “sister” locations in different States; yet, a lot of these corporations actually sell and do business throughout all fifty of the States.  As it stands presently, whether or not a given corporation charges and therefore collects a sales tax from those that it sells to in a given State, is subject to the rules and regulations of those States. Yet, consider this, when out-of-State corporations make a sale into a State that they have no physical presence in, they are in essence, trading goods for money, and therefore that State is losing that money in the sense of it no longing circulating locally.  This would seem to imply that for those corporations that have no physical presence in States that they conduct sales and business in, that they should have some sort of obligation to pay something for the opportunity to conduct that business in the first place.

So then, out-of-State corporations, should be subject to their own version of a tourism tax, of some reasonable but small amount, for anything that so is sold to States in which they have no physical presence; something akin to what tourists have to pay for lodging in a particular State that they are not a resident of.  This “tourism tax” so attached to a product being sold, could then be priced into the product so being sold, and therefore, in essence, paid by the buyer of such, or it could be absorbed by the corporation, or it could also be shared between the two parties.

It seems that in the scheme of things, most communities would be better served with sales being so transacted being local, to the extent that such is possible; thereby providing a continuing money circulating foundation for the infrastructure so needed for communities; so when, those out-of-State corporations come in with better pricing or whatnot, they should as a form of tribute, so to speak, pay a price for extracting money from the wallets of given communities, as the tax they so owe for having access to that community.

The global economy and the evisceration of manufacturing within America by kevin murray

The number of sales and profits so made by the biggest and most powerful multinational corporations in the world, so based in the United States, is truly astonishing.  This would be, in the scheme of things, a tremendous boon for those that are denizens of America, if those multinational companies made it their principle point to employ as many Americans as possible, directly in their affairs, and to provide those so employed with some sort of reasonable job security, good benefit package, and at least a living wage.  That would be ideal, if that was so happening, but in reality, multinational companies see the world typically as more of an opportunity to reduce their direct employment, thereby divesting themselves of the responsibility of providing wages and benefits to expensive domestic workers, and essentially instead outsourcing work overseas, in which the pay package, benefits, and costs so of, are often considerably cheaper than within America.

A case in point, is Apple, in which, we read that as of December 31, 2016, Apple had a direct employee count domestically of 80,000.  Yet, Apple goes on to state that they are responsible for 2,000,000 jobs in America, so attributable through United States based suppliers as well as through their App Store ecosystem, of which none of these 1,920,000 people so employed, are actually directly employed by Apple.  Further to the point, when we look outside America, we find that Apple utilizes for their overseas work, primarily foreign manufacturing contractors that themselves do the employing and thereby the supervising of hundreds of thousands of workers to assembly Apple products.  In short, Apple, only directly employs around 80,000 domestic workers, yet had revenues of $378.35 billion in fiscal year 2021; in which the reason that Apple was able to generate such enormous sales, with so few direct domestic employees, has pretty much everything to do, with Apple outsourcing to foreign lands as much work as possible, to the detriment of their own country’s workers.

All of the above serves to point out the salient fact that in America, the biggest and most powerful corporations, aren’t primarily interested in taking care of doing their good part to employ as many Americans as possible, so as to keep America great and strong; but rather their preference is to find the lowest cost producer overseas for their products and thereby to outsource as much supply of this as possible, so as to increase their profits, through the clear and obvious exploitation of these overseas workers, who typically do not have the same basic and prudent protections so provided to domestic workers in regards to safety, overall work conditions, worker rights, hours, overtime pay, unions, and the like.

In other words, our biggest multinational corporations have made a conscious choice that profit always drives their overall business decisions, thereby signifying that they aren’t really interested in doing any manufacturing in America, especially if such may lend itself to having to either deal with a union that currently exists, or the reasonable potential of union activity to come.  Rather, these multinationals are very opportunistic and duly determined to purposefully exploit foreign workers, as well as foreign lands, for they so believe that for the sake of profit, it is absolutely right to wring their bread from the sweat of oppressed other human beings, for their god, is the god of mammon, and none else.

Fair taxation should be on wealth, corporations, estates, and capital gains – not labor by kevin murray

There was a time when there was no Federal income tax, nor State income tax, imposed upon the population.  Those days ended a long time ago, and we now live in an era, in which those that are still laboring in a position in which they are considered to be an employee, have as a matter of course, taxes taken out for Social Security, Medicare, Federal, as well as State and local taxes, if so applicable.  While it is true that those that labor are subject to a graduated income tax rate, the fact of the matter is, that rather than this Federal government concentrating upon collecting money from everyone, including those that are of the middle class or below, that this Federal government, should instead, in a day and age, in which the disparity between the ultra-wealthy and the common man, gets ever bigger, and of which, a significant majority of the wealth in America, is actually held in the hands of the top 5%, that government should actually desire to do more to help the common man, by virtue of a fairer income tax policy.

Those that believe that the Federal government should treat the income so made by the labor of the common man of $100,000 or below as income that should be subject to a Federal income tax, have got it all so terribly wrong.  The bottom line is that the income tax should specifically be amended to tax those entities that have the money, the wealth, the capital assets, and none else.  For instance, once the given wealth of any entity, be it a given individual or a corporation, exceeds the total of $5 million, that wealth should be subject to a yearly progressive tax.  Additionally, those that make their money through passive investments such as through equities, bonds, and the like, should not have their realized capital gains taxed at rates as low as 15%, but should see the taxation on those investments, be structured at a minimum of 25%, and then progressively raised to a maximum of 45%.  Additionally, the amount of taxation that corporations are subject to in America, is woefully low; partly attributed to all of the lobbying so done on capitol hill, as well as through sophisticated tax avoidance schemes, along with the basic gaming of the system.  It must be recognized that as reported by wsws.org, that “US corporate profits before adjustments rose to a record high of $3.14 trillion at a seasonally adjusted annual rate in the third quarter of 2021.”  This so signifies, that for this Federal government to concentrate on the common man and their labor so as to tax such, is truly barking up the wrong tree; for the real money, is in corporate hands, as well as those that are ultra-wealthy, which are obviously the very entities that can most afford to pay income taxes to the very country that has provided them with the opportunity to make such wealth to begin with.

Finally, for those individuals that die, with an estate value of $3 million or more, this should be subject to a taxation upon such; for quite obviously while they were amongst the living, they enjoyed the fruits of having that wealth, but now that they have departed from this world, some of that wealth needs to be fairly taxed.  So then, in short, the current Federal taxation as structured, unfairly burdens those that have the least, far more than those that have the most—which demonstrates that this government needs to devote far more time, energy and effort to tax those entities that have everything, or we will continue to see an ever-widening gap between those that are the elite of America, as contrasted with those that are simply trying to get a toehold into a reasonable version of what America should and can be.

The rich and powerful and the manipulation of truth by kevin murray

As much as people might believe that the rich and powerful have some degree of influence over how they are perceived by the general public, that general public, pretty much, doesn’t know that the rich and powerful have, in actuality,  an incredible amount of influence upon how they are perceived and portrayed; of which, when such manipulation is done with skill and aplomb by those same rich and powerful, most of the general public, are none to the wiser, that they have indeed been effectively manipulated and deceived.

The thing about the rich is that the massive amount of money that they have and have access to, absolutely matters; and the entity that has that money, has therefore the opportunity to spend such in a way in which those that do the reporting, and the writing, so of, structure their stories in a format that usually favors that rich person or entity at the expense of the truth, more times than not.  So too, those that are in positions of immense power, have by virtue of that power, an awful lot of influence over other people and institutions, because powerful people and establishments have a lot of say as to who they so choose to benefit, and who they so choose to punish; of which, those that don’t comprehend that, will so suffer for their inability or reluctance to bend when they so needed to bend, so as to please and to placate those powerful interests.

The general public usually receives the news that they so read, or listen to, typically through the medium of very large and very powerful media conglomerates, in which, these media outlets, are subdivided into only two binary flavors, that to the general public, seem to be competing voices, of which, by intuition, it is thereby reasoned that one of those media outlets must be telling the truth and the other thereby, must not.  While that could be true, it doesn’t take into account, the reality of how life actually plays out, which is that typically we do not live in a society, in which, those events deemed worthy of being reported upon, always break down neatly into either that incident being clearly right, or that incident being clearly wrong, but rather real life is a heck of a lot more nuanced than that.  Further to the point, the rich and powerful, really just want the general public to pick a side, of which the rich and powerful, have already prudently taken a vested interest in both of those binary sides, so that, whichever one that the public so picks, the rich and powerful are going to always come out ahead, because they have a piece of the action, either way.

Any society, that has millions upon millions of people, of which, each of those people are capable of speaking their own mind, and of having independent thought, are always going to present a clear and present danger to the status quo.  That is why those that are the actuators of this nation, are never going to provide to that general public the unvarnished truth about anything of merit.  Instead, they are going to do their level best to manipulate the general public so as to direct them to either of the standard orthodox choices, and all those then that think outside the box, will be marginalized, ignored, and if so needed, silenced, in any of the conventional ways, and when necessary, the unconventional ones, as well.

There are less people in West Virginia, today, then back in 1940 by kevin murray

According to the census of 1940, West Virginia had a total population of 1,901,974 residents, and in 2020, that number had been reduced to 1,793,716.  To put this in perspective, recognize that the United States total population in 1940 was a bit over 132 million peoples, and in 2020 that population had grown to nearly 331.5 million peoples; yet, somehow, alone amongst all other States, West Virginia, lost population.  The thing about West Virginia, is that this is the only State in the Union, which is entirely covered by the Appalachians, and the Appalachians have historically been known as an impoverished and backward section of America – which probably has a lot to do with the geography of the Appalachians, which though beautiful, is also heavily wooded and mountainous.  Additionally, West Virginia, consists to a very large extent of an abundance of rural areas of modest population centers, often somewhat isolated, and because West Virginia also lacks the lure of having a big cosmopolitan city, those that are adventurous, motivated, and driven, are more inclined to leave West Virginia for greener pastures and opportunity; thereby leaving behind those that are often less educated, less mobile, and less inclined to move on.

Further to the reason for West Virginia’s population decline, is that, despite its abundant resources in regards to coal, forestry, and agriculture, the actual property of most intrinsic value in many of these areas, are often owned and controlled by corporate or outside interests, as compared to that same valuable land being owned by those that are its residents.  Additionally, communities, that lack labor power in regards to blue-collar type of work, are going to typically make less money and have less benefits, than those that have been able to negotiate with their employer through the strength of the union or similar, so as to get themselves a better pay package, or that alternatively work in higher paying white-collar type of work.  In other words, to a very large extent, the poverty and thereby the decline of the population in West Virginia can be fairly attributed to the fact that the people that reside there, make poor wages which goes along also with it having less of its residents on average, so obtaining a Bachelor’s degree or better, in comparison to the average percentage obtaining such in the United States, in whole.

In short, West Virginia, lacks the type of industry that is on the rise, as well as the diversity, culture, and opportunity, that would have a tendency to first of all bring in future residents, as well as because of the lack of these very things, this lends itself thereby to West Virginia losing some of its best and brightest to other States, which seemingly have much more to offer.  That said, West Virginia, is affordable from a real estate and cost of living perspective, and in an era in which more and more white-collar jobs permit people to work remotely, could conceivably thereby bring a renaissance of educated professionals to West Virginia, but alas this probably won’t; mainly because West Virginia lacks the necessary infrastructure to lure in well-educated people, because of its lack of first-rate universities, culture, entertainment, and the like.  This signifies that the road ahead for West Virginia is going to continue to be difficult, and in absence of West Virginia making some fundamental changes to its structure, this is going to essentially mean that West Virginia will continue to stagnate.

Tariffs, taxes, and the American Revolution by kevin murray

For a lot of people, the saying, “no taxation, without representation,” while seeming to be a reasonable complaint, also seems to be a bridge too far, to actually seriously contemplate, let alone to have an actual revolution, in response to that demand not so being successfully met.  In fact, it seems difficult to get enough people of substance and influence, to literally risk their lives, fortunes, and honor on behalf of such, but yet, this would appear to have been what so happened in the American revolution.

The thing about money and business, in respect to taxes and tariffs, is not a whole lot of people and businesses are all that thrilled about those taxes and tariffs to begin with; and for a certainty with their business interests involved, as well as their personal needs at risk, the arbitrary or punitive increase of taxes or tariffs is never going to go down well; especially if the perception by those colonists is that these taxes and tariffs are unreasonable.  In truth, unexpected and unwarranted taxes and tariffs will definitely have an adverse impact upon present business, while also probably negatively affecting future business, because the playing field for conducting such, has materially changed; in addition to the fact that when this is apparently subject to even further change, in the context of a construct in which the colonists have no say or sway, all makes for a very bad brew.

If you want to find a cause that will unite a people, find something that people universally believe is both unfair and punitive, and they will indeed start first with the grumbling and then they will progressively begin to look at their options as well as reasonable responses to such so as to counteract it.  Now, from the perspective, of the entity so imposing punitive taxes and high tariffs, they from a strictly accounting perspective, may well believe and also anticipate, based on past history, that they will receive a substantial increase in the future taxation revenue so collected; but they have made the presumptuous assumption, that such taxes and tariffs imposed, will not adversely affect people or their business behavior, when, of course, it will, in all probability.  So, in reality, if it used to be, that there was some degree of subterfuge in personal and business affairs, this will noticeably increase, by virtue of having that unwarranted imposition enacted.

When it comes to taxes and tariffs, it should be remembered, that you can shear a sheep multiple times, but you can only skin it once; and thereby the breaking point of what is to be considered being reasonably sheared by those colonists, to perceiving of such as being skinned, is something that no government of import, should want to cross, for by those actions, revolutions do happen, and some of those revolutions are successful.  Those governments that put an ever-higher burden upon those it so governs, and especially those governments that govern from afar, and thereby care not to listen to those opposing voices, may so find, that things will not go as expected or anticipated, for when a people's voice is effectively silenced, and when those same people, are finding themselves feeling that they are being treated more akin to serfs, they may well be so inclined to thereby seek their freedom, by any means, possible.

The freedom to express our opinion is our right by kevin murray

Many people believe that it is proper that we should be entitled to express our own thoughts, our own opinions, and our own speech, with very limited restrictions; of which, an example of a legitimate restriction, would be something like falsely calling out a fire at a crowded event, thereby leading to a possible ensuing panic and people getting potentially hurt.  Yet, as much as people believe that we should have the right to freely express ourselves, there are plenty of other people that believe that there should indeed be restrictions in place, precluding hateful speech, as well as other forms of speech, that those particular people do not care for.

The very basic problem with any restriction on speech, is that, many governments, even ostensibly free and democratic ones, absolutely want to have some sort of control or supervision of what is so being said and propagated, thereby signifying that often governments find the temptation to censor speech, under the excuse, such as for the security of the homeland, or for the peace and harmony of the homeland, very tempting to activate, and thereby utilize reasonable excuses to do so, such as desiring to preclude what has been defined as “hate” speech or that which is overly critical of the state, for instance.

For certain governments, busy bodies, and those other people, that don't care to hear opinions that annoy them, they do so find, that when a given person or organization can thereby be silenced, of their opinions and of their viewpoints, that this thus serves to put these entitled privileged people and governments subsequently in pole position, to have just their viewpoints and just their opinions, to be accepted by the general population as legit; whereas those that dissent or have a contrary opinion, are not accorded the same respect or opportunity.

Sure, perhaps, it is inconvenient, when other people have different opinions, especially those opinions that offend us, or hurt us, or that appear to us to just be wrong; but none of us have the right to demand that another person or organization, simply be silenced, as if we are to be the sole arbiters of what is and what isn’t allowed.  The fact of the matter is, that very few people, establish a viewpoint at a youngish age, in which, that viewpoint, never varies, never wavers, and never changes.  To actually believe that a young adult or even someone a bit older, is so wise, and so astute, that they no longer have room for growth as they age, or for change, is clearly mistaken.  This so signifies, that there are plenty of people that change their opinions and their viewpoints, based upon their life experiences as they grow older, if not all of the time, at least frequently enough, and dramatically enough, to end up, many a time, taking the very side that they so use to castigate against -- which is their unalienable right.

To be human, necessitates the free will to express ourselves in a way that we so wish, subject to sensible laws, as well as to believe what we so desire to believe, whether right or wrong.  Therefore, to express the opinion, that certain people or certain organizations must be silenced, for the good of the people, seems to fundamentally ignore the salient fact that either we are all entitled to the same unalienable rights, which includes the freedom of speech and opinion, or we are not; and if we are not, we clearly are not free.

Beyond smoke and mirrors by kevin murray

It certainly does make sense that we would like to make not only a good impression upon others, but that we would also like to impress others with some quality of ours that we both cherish and have.  After all, most everyone sincerely wishes to be validated by someone that they respect -- and that validation typically feels good to have acknowledged, in response.  That said, and as good as that might so be, there is an additional attribute which rises far above trying to impress someone, while also serving to get us out and away from being limited to our own self domain and ego, which is so represented by our sincere desire to make a positive contribution along with a meaningful impact upon others as our raison d'être.

Those that desire to impress others without any real substance behind such, and make this into their vocation, have not traveled much further than desiring those others to appreciate them for whatever supposed qualities that they are projecting to them, which seems to be not only a very small and limiting circle, but also a rather pathetic calling in life.  On the other hand, those that are able to find meaning in the passing on of their knowledge and wisdom onto worthy others, and find satisfaction, in those people's subsequent success, have clearly enlarged their circle, to include those that are well capable of receiving such, and thereby by these people's future achievements, have paid their fair respect to not only those that previously encouraged them, but have also passed such wisdom on, as well.

Each of us has options of how we go about structuring our interactions with others; and of which the perspective that we bring into those encounters, determines to a large extent the actual worth that those interactions so represent.  There is many a person that is really too modest, or feels that they have nothing of real import to impart, that don't seem to rightly comprehend, that even those tales of woe and mistakes so made and suffered, have their teaching value; for it is a heck of a lot better, to take personal lessons learned and suffered through, and rather than keep such exclusively to ourselves, provide the object lesson so learned to others, in the hopes that impressionable others, will not too fall prey to the exact same thing or similar, that bit us.

Far too many of us, want to impress others, to the exclusion of just about everything else; never seeming to consciously recognize that such a desire as that, is really nothing much more than seeking ego gratification.  We are meant, instead, to achieve so much more than that, of which, this can only conceivably come forth from finding something of merit to champion, that is outside of our own personal domain.  What that so particularly represents, varies from person-to-person, but in substance, it's always going to be about the same; which is to find someone or something that complements our drive and desire to help make society a better place for our participation in it, so accomplished by our doing our good part to have a positive as well as a meaningful impact upon all those that we interact with.

Acting out and the need for attention by kevin murray

There are plenty of people that “act out” and they do so for a variety of reasons, such as for the attention, or as a general need to have acknowledged that they are valued, and thereby worth the time of somebody to pay some mind to them, as well as to get basic confirmation from those that they congregate with that they are still considered to be a member in good standing within their particular group.  In truth, almost all of us, need to feel that we belong to someone or to some group, and many of us that feel that way, will act out, at least from time-to-time when we feel that we are being consistently ignored, or marginalized. Therefore, this so signifies, that in those situations in which a given person, is not getting the attention that they need or that they crave from that of which they expect to receive some attention from, that they will thus become susceptible to looking outside their own people or group to someone or something else to get such, and that is probably seldom a real good thing.

So then, for a certainty, those that act out and seek attention, but don't seem to receive in response the corresponding reaction so desired, or the attention so craved; are going to find that someone else that provides for them that attention, for good or for bad reasons, is probably going to appeal to them.  That, in a nutshell, is the fundamental problem, so seen, when we consistently fail to validate people that need our undivided attention.  After all, we are social creatures, that need to feel valued, and especially to feel valued by those that make up our social group.

Additionally, there are plenty of people that do get a reasonable amount of attention, all things considered, when we account for the fact that people have responsibilities and duties that may well necessitate spending appreciable time and energy away from the group, in order to take care of work, school, and other meaningful things of that sort.  So then, those people that continue to act out, are probably doing so, not so much because they really aren't getting attention at all, but rather as a way and means to manipulate others for their benefit, so as to receive the attention, that makes them feel valued or satisfied.

That said, though, those that crave attention aren't always necessarily high-maintenance, for some of those people when they do get the attention that they so richly desire from someone that they highly value, are thereby subsequently pleased to be compliant to the requests and desires of that person who is now paying attention to them, because having seen their personal value, validated, they are thus far more amendable to accommodate that person who has shown interest in them. So, to a certain extent, some of those that act out, are more than willing, to do to their quid pro quo part in return for having received that attention by thus conforming to the expectations that the other party so desires, thereby providing to all involved, a happy medium.

Why we like to give and why it feels right by kevin murray

One might think that the volunteering for a cause, without compensation, would be in ever shorter supply in this fast-paced world; but that isn't really true at all.  There are plenty of people that really do enjoy volunteering, and really do take pleasure in the helping of other people, irrespective of whether or not they receive anything that one would traditionally consider to be compensation for doing so.

The reason why so many people want to give, has an awful lot to do, with the fact that first of all, we are meant to be connected, human being to human being, for we are social creatures, along with us also intuitively recognizing the important value of human connections that are real, meaningful, and sincere.  Each one of us wants to be valued, and one way to demonstrate that we value someone else, is to do something for them, without expecting anything in return.  For in reality to do something that is bigger than one's own personal domain, makes us feel like we're part of something bigger than us, and to feel that, brings the type of satisfaction that money cannot buy.

Each one of us has a deep desire to be needed, and especially to be needed by those that are our peers, for it is in that needing and thereby the filling of that need, that we feel that we are contributing to the betterment of humankind, which thereby allows us to feel that we are doing our good part to make a positive contribution for others – as compared to simply sitting back and desiring to be strictly catered to by them, as if we were born to that sort of entitlement.

We may want to be a lot of things, in our professional life and in our personal life, but when it is all said and done, ultimately, we want to be doing what so needs to be done to be living a purposeful life, or else we will feel some degree of dissatisfaction and disappointment as well as a lack of fulfillment if we so fail to do so; especially when we know for a certainty we could have and should have done so.  So too, the troubles and worries that we may so have in our own lives, make us better able to be put those things into perspective when we go on to helping others, for in the seeing and the knowing of how much others suffer through myriad things, makes us re-evaluate whether our lives our thus half full or half empty.

All of us want to feel wanted, yet, many of us may find ourselves not feeling in our lives, from some of the most important people that we know, that we are so wanted.  Our response to that could be manifold, but one of the best responses, so of, is to find something outside of ourselves, that permits us to lend a helping hand to someone in need, that will through the success of such, build our self-esteem up and make us feel that we are indeed doing our part to help make this world a better place for our being part of it.

“A free Press is the unsleeping guardian of every other right that freemen prize” by kevin murray

The above quotation comes from the incomparable Winston Churchill, of which, we don't hear and thereby take to heart often enough nowadays this important and vital wisdom, so necessary for the sustainability of a vibrant as well as an informed general public. It must be remembered, that whomever controls the narrative, is in the cat's bird seat, of manipulating and thereby effectively controlling the direction of the general population's proclivities, which is of immense value for those governments that would prefer to see nothing brokered, and desire to keep their population instead within the rails of their orthodox party line.

Not only is the free press of vital importance to the people, but those people need also to be active participants in their own country's affairs and thereby be engaged to that which does their governance on behalf of them.  After all, if the supposed representatives of the people, aren't really representing their best interests, then the people will so duly suffer.  So too, it is essential that we be attuned to hearing our news from outside sources, as well as from independent voices that are collectively beholden to no particular party or entity, so that we can be informed of what is really going on, around us, in our name.  For it must be acknowledged that no matter how much a given government or corporate entity claims that they are fine with dissent and contrary opinions, the truth is that in regards to the perceived interests of those that are its actuators, such dissent is neither encouraged or welcomed.

Further, it has to be recognized that each of us has their own viewpoint and therefore their own opinions on a variety of topics, and anytime in essence, that those that represent the free press, are restricted in what and how they are to discuss certain subjects and report upon them, then that is the equivalency of censorship; and therefore, this is an infringement of our essential right to free speech.

So too, it has to be acknowledged that one informed voice, alone, only has so much influence; whereas the free press because of its structure is able to potentially reach a vast audience, and thereby to motivate, influence, or inform a number of people, of that which is of interest to them.  Further, there are some people that are stationed within governmental auspices, or of corporate entities, that have a dissenting opinion, or information that they would like to see get publicized, for in many a case, they know things, that the general public does not, and they believe that they have a civic duty to enlightened the general public about such.  This thus signifies that the free press also operates as a viable outlet to bring the light, to that which has been hidden in the shadows.

It is vital for the people that the free press be independent from those agencies that would try to influence it for their own agenda, for the press has a needed duty to be a bastion of defense, as well as of necessary information, that as its core, provides to the people the type of content, that is accurate and detailed enough that an informed opinion can be achieved, so that a free people can freely formulate their own opinion about matters that interest them. The purpose of a vibrant free press is to remind us that we should never want to be a nation of lethargic sheep, but rather we are meant to be a nation of informed citizens, that know how to think for themselves.

That which is moral and that which is not by kevin murray

There are plenty of people that aren't really concerned about whether a given action so taken by them is moral or not, or right or not, and thus pretty much go about their business without the serious contemplation of such.  On the other hand, there is a significant amount of people, that do care as to whether what they are doing is right or wrong, moral or immoral, but are prone to judge their own actions through the prism that favors their perspective and their judgment, above all others, and especially those others that seemingly have a valid counterpoint.

For all those that actually do care about how their actions, behaviors, and deeds, are received by those that they interact with, the reality of the situation is that the judgment of such, should primarily be held by those that are our fellow sojourners in society.  That is to say, fair judgment, is always best done by a jury of our peers or by a higher agency, as opposed to each one of us, judging ourselves, as if somehow, we can separate our ego enough, while also removing self-justification, so of, to come to a fair judgment.

It then follows, that what we so define as right or wrong, logically follows that it must have the characteristic of a universal doctrine.  In other words, morality can't be that sometimes something is right and sometimes that very same thing is wrong, solely dependent upon which side of the equation that we are on, or in conformance to what we so personally desire it to be; rather, it needs to be consistent while also being perceived by outside parties as having been fairly applied, all of the time.  So then, it is fair to say, that what is good for the goose, must also be good for the gander, or else that isn't justice, and therefore that isn't right.

Intuitively, we know, that what is moral, can never be that which changes with the seasons, or changes with the times; for such to be a universal law, it must be correct for all seasons and all times, or else, it isn't really moral, but rather it is something that gives, at best, the illusion of being moral, but at its core, cannot be.  This signifies that a moral law, in order to be moral, must at its foundation be that which is universal, and thereby applicable equally to all, while also being that which is good in its substance, by thereby being a principle that will be of beneficence to whole of the people, and not just to the benefit of a select few.

So then, that which is moral consists of that which is universal, along with that which is also good.  For, in reality, we so find that nothing is moral if it cannot sustain itself as a universal principle that is applicable to all; in addition to also having a purpose that must always uphold humankind's unalienable rights, as well as encouraging and supporting the improvement of our character.  All those combined, thereby, are the attributes of morality, and if any of those elements are missing, then such is not moral.

There are advantages to remaining a private corporation by kevin murray

The most salient reason why corporations go public is to sell shares to the general public, thereby paying back and rewarding the original private investors with the proceeds from that stock issuance, which oftentimes, can be quite considerable – in addition to that corporation also receiving in return a massive infusion of new capital from those of the public that bought those shares.  However, once a company becomes public, not only do the public shareholders have some say, but also public corporations are prone to suffering from certain investors of that public thus being able to exert pressure upon management should they feel some degree of dissatisfaction; in addition to the fact, that the company is susceptible to being under the microscope, in regards to expected quarterly earnings, from TV financial programs and pundits.

When it comes to private corporations, they are to the general public, for the most part, pretty invisible, seemingly looked upon as just regular corporations, of no real import, one way or another.  This may indeed be true for the lion's share of private corporations -- for the bulk of those private corporations aren't all that big in the sense of employees, sales, or influence.  However, it is the exceptions to that rule that make some of these private corporations, a real force of nature.

The biggest advantage that any private corporation has, is the fact that the corporation does not need to answer to any other entity or organization other than to those that are the owners of that private corporation, which typically consists of a select few that were the founders of such, or related to those founders, or those that the founders specifically brought in, so as to grow the corporation. Further, a significant amount of public companies, pay out dividends each and every year to their stockholders, as a ways and means to share some of those profits, so being made by that company, and to encourage those that are its stockholders to continue with their investment, over the long term; and this expenditure of money is definitely money that has left that public corporation to go to those that are its stockholders, of which, that money can easily represent to that corporation a very large sum of capital and therefore of its profits, so leaving that corporation on an annual basis.  On the other hand, in regards to private corporations, because they are private, they don't have any dividends to pay, which means, that the profits so being generated can be continually invested into, for instance, the buying out or the investment of other enterprises, or things of that sort.

This so signifies that once a private corporation reaches the stage in which they are able to consistently make good profits, that they therefore are in a very good strategic position, which provides them with the flexibility and the maneuverability to get business done, with thereby an absolute minimum of outside agitation or pushback, which allows them to pursue whatever business arrangement that they best see fit, thereby giving these private corporations an enviable amount of dexterity to get accomplished business deals that make good sense for them.  In short, private corporations that have access to the capital so needed or have generated such, have created a clear pathway that arguably will permit them to grow at a faster pace than public companies, for they need not pay out any dividends, nor answer to public shareholders, which has eliminated those inconvenient obstacles and puts them instead into a very strong business position.

Before there were clocks and watches there was twilight and dawn by kevin murray

We live in an era in which the knowing of what time it is, is as straightforward as looking down at our watch, or our smartphone, or at a clock on our counter or elsewhere.  So then, at virtually any time, we know what time it is, and thereby are able to deal well with all the things that are time sensitive, such as showing up for work at a certain time, going to an event at a specific time, or meeting up with a friend; which are all things that we monitor through the knowing of what time of day it is, of which, those people or things that we are interacting with, all keep track of time the same way that we do.  In other words, time is structured in an orthodox way that all are privy to.

Nowadays, we take the knowing of what time it is, as a given, of which, few people, ever contemplate upon how often and how dependent we are on knowing that time, of which, the prime example of this, is when we simply meet up with people at a certain time, in which, by the knowledge of that time, down to the minute, makes the accomplishment of that mission, seamless.  So then, to turn back the clock, so to speak, before there were watches, and before there were clocks, we were left in an era in which the time keeping was primarily based upon the position of the sun in the sky.

We therefore find that the coordination between peoples, without clocks or, quite obviously, any other modern communication device, was left to the reading of the sky as well as of the sunlight or the lack thereof, in which, to a very large extent, such coordination came down to, each party, having a clear understanding of what they were referring to when they agreed to meet up, in which, this would thereby necessitate a very common comprehension of what something like dawn or twilight would mean to each party, and thereby, such became a good way to successfully meet up.

What modern society pretty much takes for granted is that it is in the knowledge of what time that it is, that thereby is the key that permits us to successfully get well accomplished what so needs to be accomplished, of which, the knowledge of that specific time and date, is the critical component to that success.  Those that have previously had to deal with the lack of such specificity, had to make do with their own ways of marking time through things such as a sundial, the reading of the stars, the sky, or the sunlight.

We have come a long way from having to meet up with people, based upon the position of the sun, of which, despite that handicap, there were some advantages for those people, in the sense that times were slower back then, thereby signifying that back in the day, humankind was not nearly as beholden to the specific time, so marked down to a minute, as we are so, today.

Corporate power must be checked by government by kevin murray

There is a fair amount of people, and certainly an awful lot of influential people, that believe that corporations are the “cat’s meow.”  These people that are typically so big on corporations are quite obviously, and almost exclusively, those that directly or indirectly benefit from the profits and monies so made by these corporations, of which, some of the mightiest of these corporations, incredibly have annual sales in the hundreds of billions of dollars.  The main reason why certain people and many corporations desire to have a laissez faire type of governmental or public oversight, is that they don’t want any undue or undesired interference in their primary business of making money.  After all, when life is good for a particular corporation, they have no interest in changing a thing.  On the other hand, the very reason, that America has an ever-higher and ever-growing disparity in the distribution of its income and wealth, in contrast to a more equal sharing of such, is the fact that corporate power in America has never been stronger, than it is so represented currently in the 21st century.

There is only one entity and only one force, that could conceivably hold a candle to what has become of these corporations, which as artificial creations of the state, are supposed to exist under the aegis of the state for the general benefit of the public, expressly provided as a condition for having been granted perpetuity as well as the removal in most cases, of personal liability.  If this government, will not do its part to see that corporations serve the public good, at least as part of its mission, then that government has done a grave disservice to the people, for the people are subject to the laws of physical life, and have therefore a finite amount of time on this good earth to enjoy the fruits of their labor; whereas, corporations if not properly regulated and controlled, are something akin to Frankenstein’s monster, which thereby becomes a corporate beast, of which, because of corporate power, strength, size, and influence, creates a construct which is exclusively good for those corporate entities, to the detriment, of the public, at large.

Most people just can’t conceptualize how big corporations have become in the modern age, but recognize, that when corporations are able to make billions upon billions of dollars in corporate profits, each and every year, then what the general public thereby is dealing with, is never going to be a fair fight.  Those then, that make up the governance of this nation, have a sacred duty to the people, to do right by the majority of those people, and for a certainty, at a minimum, play fair with the people.  Remember this well, the lust for profit and the desire for power, is a siren call that many find themselves inclined or compelled to, and as part of that drive for profit and power, many a corporate officer, is going to be sorely tempted to offshore as much of the work and labor that they possibly can for profit, as well as to cheat the tax authorities by the abusing and taking advantage of the tax code for their own corporate benefit, and are susceptible to “doctoring” whatever documents need to be “doctored” in order to circumvent pollution and environmental laws, when so deemed necessary, and finally, will do whatever serves their purpose to strangle in the cradle, any nascent labor union activity.  In truth, only the government has the necessary power and sharp tools to check corporate power and greed, and when that government is ineffective in doing so, or co-opted by corporate influence, then the end result is what we so see, today.
