We are fortunate to live under a Constitution in which this is a nation of, for, and by the people, with equal rights for all, and in theory, none are afforded special privileges, for all are equal in the eyes of justice. The reality, though, is significantly different, for this country has always had a favored race, a favored religion, and those that are far more equal and hence entitled to privileges not bestowed upon the unfavored, which is not what this government is supposed to represent, and seems to conflict with the legitimacy of the government, for it could be argued, that the way things are, is not in conformance with the consent of all those so governed, for it favors the few to the harm of the many.
The question that really needs to be asked is why it is that some are favored, some have more rights and hence more benefits, and some have more privileges. Why is this the way that it is? The answer seems to be that government, in conjunction with the justice department and the policing arm of the state, seems to consistently suffer from a dynamic in which the few are able to benefit at the expense of the many, by capturing those that could do something about it, through money, through power, or through other enticements that will get the job done for them. That is to say, no matter how well a given law is written or the intention behind such a law, it’s relatively easy to get around the law, as well as other rules and regulations when the powers that be are themselves part of the few that are benefiting, or find it to be that they not only can’t resist personal aggrandizement but rather, desire to do all that they can to get or even to augment such.
Indeed, our government is only as good as those who impose and interpret the government and its duties on behalf of the people, and when the wrong people are in control, or have, in essence, been compromised or bought, then there are going to be those few that will have the rights and privileges that they savor held in their exclusive hands. Obviously, this isn’t fair, because no one person, or one entity, or a consortium of such, should be treated in a way and manner that they get certain advantages that others who are not in the same position cannot avail themselves of.
So then, this is the real issue of the day, as to whether or not this nation is moving in the direction of equal treatment for all, and no special privileges for any, or whether it is moving in the very opposite direction, so that the few can essentially lord it over the many, thus exploiting labor to their advantage, and twisting the laws so that those that are a nuisance or worse, suffer, whereas those that are connected, have a perpetual get out of jail card or are deemed untouchable.
In sum, a great nation should be judged by how they treat the lowest and most vulnerable of its people as contrasted to those in high positions, and from there it can be determined as to whether that nation has been or is in harmony with equal rights and privileges for all.
